Solicitor announces mentorship program addition to Veterans Court

As the nation prepares to honor and celebrate its veterans on Veterans Day, 8th Circuit Solicitor David M. Stumbo on Friday announced a new Veterans Court program component aimed at helping veterans obtain the help they need to battle issues such as substance abuse, mental health and other issues unique to veterans.

Newberry man arrested after assaulting a woman with a knife

Greenwood City Police arrested a man after receiving a phone call to 911 that he was beating a woman.

Thomas Thaddaeus Tribble, 25 of 749 Daisy Street, Newberry was arrested and charged with domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature and possession of a weapon during commission of a crime.

Abbeville man arrested after stealing money from purse

On Oct 11, 2018 Greenwood County Sheriff Officers responded to Ewireless on the 72 Bypass in Greenwood for a possible shoplifting and petit larceny.

According to the report, a store employee call police after two white males came in to the store and notice money missing from her purse after they left.  

As they entered the store, one man began talking to the clerk while the taller male walked around manipulating items on the sales floor.  Then the taller male entered the employee break room for a few minutes. He then came out and told the other man with him that they needed to leave and drove away in a burgundy minivan.

Greenwood drug dealer receives consecutive sentences for assaulting officers

Eighth Circuit Solicitor David M. Stumbo announced Friday that a Greenwood drug dealer received consecutive sentences after he assaulted two agents with the Greenwood County Drug Enforcement Unit while being arrested on drug charges.

Mayor Adams delivers last "State of the City" address

City of Greenwood Mayor Welborn Adams delivered his final ‘State of the City’ address to members of the business community at the Greenwood SC Chamber’s “State of the City & County  Address” on November 2nd.   

Mayor Adams has served for nearly a decade in office and provided an update along with Greenwood County Council Chairman Steven Brown.

Northland secures investor and initiates $50 Million Network Improvement Plan

On October 1st, 2018, Northland secured new investors that have agreed to fund a $50 million capital investment in network improvements which will offer 100 Mbps across their serviceable footprint and roll out 1 Gigabit services before the end of 2019. Northland also recently hired Ed Butler, a senior Commercial Services Executive with over 20 years of business broadband sales experience to lead the effort to expand commercial services to small and medium size fiber customers, school district infrastructure projects, rural hospital broadband services, utility and municipality fiber solutions, as well as wireless backhaul and enterprise business fiber solutions.

'Finally, We'll Be Turning the Dirt' Piedmont Tech to Break Ground on O'Dell Center

In 2016, Piedmont Technical College (PTC) announced plans to build the William H. “Billy” O’Dell Upstate Center for Manufacturing Excellence, so named in honor of the late, long-serving state senator from the Lakelands. What followed were months of fundraising, voter passage of a penny sales tax and the receipt of a sizable federal grant. It’s been a long journey, but at long last, PTC will break ground on the O’Dell Center on Thursday, Nov. 15, at 9:30 a.m. in front of the Medford Center on South Emerald Road on the college’s Greenwood campus.

Greenwood man arrested for sexually assaulting minor multiple times

A Greenwood man has been arrested after a victim reported of being sexually assaulted by him on multiple occasions over several years.

Alfred Matthias Warren, 32 of 301 Broadway Ave, Greenwood was arrested and charged with criminal sexual conduct with a minor 1st, 2nd and 3rd degree.

Store employee arrested for stealing lottery tickets

A Greenwood woman was arrested after a store manager found evidence that she stole lottery tickets while working.

Adrianna Kashae Nance, 21 of 111 Lanham Street, Greenwood was arrested and charged with breach of trust $2,000 or less and intent to defraud lottery.

Voters throughout the city of Greenwood has chosen a new Mayor, Brandon Smith to help steer Greenwood over the next few years.  Smith defeated Annette Edwards 57.6% to 41.9% during yesterday’s election.

Ninety Six man arrested for burglary, kidnapping and more

On November 4, 2018 the Greenwood County Sheriff arrested a man after he broke into a home, beat a victim with a pistol, tied him up and ended up stealing his vehicle.

Wesley Hunter Clinkscales, 31 of Ninety Six was arrested and charged with kidnapping, assault and battery, burglary, grand larceny and possession of a weapon during commission of a crime.

GHS Army JROTC presents colors at NBA game

Greenwood High School Army JROTC Color Guard presented the colors at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte NC for the NBA game between the Charlotte Hornets and the Chicago Bulls Friday, October 26. “This was a tremendous honor and confidence builder for these students to be able to present the colors before an audience of more than 15,000 fans,” GHS JROTC instructor CSM (Ret) Jeffrey Brown said. “It could be a once in a lifetime experience to step onto an NBA floor reserved for professional basketball players.”

Crossroads Celebrates 30th Anniversary

Twenty-one churches were represented during Crossroads’ recent banquet celebrating its 30th anniversary. Approx. 200 guests gathered on October 23rd at Rice Memorial Church to support this vital ministry. Founded in 1988 Greenwood’s crisis pregnancy center has saved countless lives by serving women who are experiencing unplanned pregnancies. The center provides support through advice, education, referral and material assistance in order to help young women choose life.

GGC's New Director of Research, Richard Steet, PhD, Receives $1.2 Million NIH Grant Renewal

The Greenwood Genetic Center’s (GGC’s) new Director of Research, Richard Steet, PhD, is bringing big changes to the Center. Steet, who joined GGC in August from the University of Georgia, and his longtime collaborator, Heather Flanagan-Steet, PhD, have developed an aquaculture facility at the Center for the study of zebrafish, a model organism for human genetic disorders.

Woman arrested for stealing items from shed

Greenwood County Sheriff Deputies arrested a Greenwood woman on burglary charges after a homeowner on Wilson Bridge Road reported several missing items from his home.

Shanna Joann Reeves, 25 of 218 Puckett Ferry Road, Greenwood SC was arrested and charged with 2nd degree burglary and grand larceny.
