Self Family donates to Unleash The Possibilities campaign

The Self Family Foundation has committed $300,000 to support the Humane Society's "Unleash The Possibilities" major gifts campaign.  The monies raised are to build and fund the Adoption Center, Spay/Neuter Clinic, and Community Education Room in the new animal care center being constructed in collaboration with Greenwood County.

Montgomery Center receives CenteringPregnancy approval

Self Regional Healthcare’s Montgomery Center for Family Medicine has achieved recognition as a CenteringPregnancy “approved site” by the Centering Healthcare Institute. Centering is a six-month group model of prenatal care that consists of 10 sessions. The group meets monthly for the first four sessions and then bi-weekly for the last six sessions.

Blue Knights supports Special Olympics

SC VII of the Blue Knights Law Enforcement motorcycle club recently presented Special Olympics Area 5 (Whitten Center) a check for $7200.00 for this years poker run held in April. The two photo's attached are the club members presenting Director of SOA 5, Shelby Benson with the check and the group photo with some of the athletes and the Blue Knights.

Depending on how it is written, there are two definitions. May Day is a springtime festival that can include dancing, singing and food. Mayday is an international radio distress signal for help. We are actually going to cover both of these. May is the signature month for Relay For Life. Many of our over 6,000 Relays are held during this month.

Piedmont Tech Remembers the Emanuel Nine with Special Program

As the first anniversary of the Emanuel Church shootings approaches, Piedmont Technical College will host a special event to commemorate the tragic event.

The program will be held Thursday, June 2 at 1 p.m. in the PTC library. Dr. J. David Gillespie, Dana Professor of Political Science, emeritus, at Presbyterian College, will be the guest speaker at a program featuring his book “Race Murder, Christian Forgiveness, and Revolutionary Change in Charleston South Carolina: A Seminal Moment in American History.”

At Piedmont Technical College’s recent spring commencement exercises, outstanding students from each of the college’s seven supporting counties were honored for academic achievement. Three Greenwood County students were honored for maintaining high academic success. Tammy Kullnat, left, was recognized by PTC area commission member Dr. George Cone during the evening ceremony. Kullnat is an Associate in Arts graduate.

Anderson is a computer technology graduate.

The Greenwood CPW advises the residents and businesses of Cokesbury Road, from Cobb Road to Rock Creek Blvd. to include Northwoods Road, Pinecrest Drive and Meadowbrook Drive, located in Greenwood County that they no longer need to boil their water prior to drinking or cooking.

Lander theatre professor finds a new venue for artistic expression

After more than 30 years as a stage actress and director, Lander University Professor of Theatre Monique Sacay-Bagwell has shifted her talents to a new pursuit. When she is not teaching or involved in a theatre production, she performs off stage, behind a microphone as a voice-over artist, narrating audio books.

Lander graduates celebrate longevity, each surpassing 100 years in age

Lander University alumna Margaret Lander Scheibler, of Due West, celebrated her 104th birthday recently, and she was treated to a special gathering at The Lander Foundation and Alumni Center to celebrate the occasion. As she walked through the front entrance on the arm of her nephew, Robert Lander, of Abbeville, a large group of people waiting inside greeted her with applause. She was confused at first, but smiled broadly when Alumni Affairs Director Myra Greene told her it was a surprise birthday party in her honor.

Greenwood City Council rescinded votes on two ordinances related to the outdoor consumption of alcohol in Uptown after concerns were raised by two members of council over the ethics of another council member voting on the ordinances.

Greenwood Area Habitat for Humanity teams with Lowe's for Westside Revitalization Blitz

Greenwood Area Habitat for Humanity has joined forces with Lowe’s Heroes employee volunteers from 14 Upstate stores in a first of its kind daylong blitz to revitalize Greenwood’s Westside neighborhood.

On Tuesday, May 24, store teams will work across the Westside neighborhood to complete projects such as home repairs, installing neighborhood signs and cleaning up the local community center. These projects will support the work that Greenwood Area Habitat for Humanity does in a continued partnership with the Westside community. The work will also support a yearlong effort between Habitat for Humanity International and Lowe’s to help 1,000 families build or repair their homes by the holidays.

Campaign Launched to Honor Lander Alumna's 104th Birthday

The Lander University Alumni Association is launching a 104-hour campaign challenge on Monday, May 16, to help endow a scholarship in honor of Margaret Lander Scheibler, a member of the Lander Class of 1933 who celebrated her 104th birthday last week.

The “Margaret 104 Challenge” will begin at 1:04 p.m. today, and organizers want to have 104 donors each give $104 before the challenge officially ends at 9:04 p.m. Friday, May 20. The goal is to raise $10,400 to endow a scholarship that would be awarded in the fall to an exercise science major.

A unique event is coming to Lake Greenwood.  For two weekends, June 4 and June 11, Connect Lake Greenwood is hosting Lakeside Market.  This event will have two food trucks and several other local food vendors.  This event is to help determine the likelihood of bringing in a restaurant to the location.
