Bee City USA® has renewed Greenwood, South Carolina’s certification for 2019 following a rigorous renewal application process.  This completed the efforts of Bee City Greenwood to accomplish this recertification, the facilitating committee for Greenwood’s efforts to engage the community in promoting pollinator-friendliness.

Annual breakfast recognizes Lander employees and award winners

More than 200 Lander University employees were on hand May 21 for the school’s 19th annual Staff Excellence Awards breakfast.

Created in 2001 to honor all staff members and to recognize those who have gone above and beyond their regular professional duty, the awards breakfast includes all non-faculty Lander staff departments, offices and special services employees.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity to bring all of the staff together for fellowship, and to appreciate them for their service and dedication to Lander and its students,” said Kurstin LaCoste, Human Resources Coordinator. “Award nominations are submitted by colleagues, and winners are selected by the President’s Cabinet.”

Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program Returns to a County Near You

The Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) returns this summer with the goals of supplementing the diets of low-income seniors with fresh, nutritious produce and supporting South Carolina's small farmers.

The seasonal USDA grant program allows individuals 60 and older to purchase unprocessed fruits and vegetables from authorized farmers’ markets, roadside stands and community-supported agriculture programs May through October 15.

Participants receive $25 in the form of five checks of $5 to spend at authorized locations. Checks are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

District 50 to Host Public Forums for Superintendent Finalists

Greenwood School District 50 will host public forums for the four Superintendent Finalists on Tuesday, May 21st and Wednesday, May 22nd at Genesis Education Center in their Board Room, 400 Glenwood St.  

The purpose of these forums is to provide students, parents, and community members the opportunity to meet the finalists and discuss their future plans for the district.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority new members

The Greenwood Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. welcomed new members on Sunday, April 28th.  

On Saturday, May 18th, the chapter will celebrate a year of community service, its newest members, chapter programs, leadership, and scholarship awards. Scholarship recipients were selected from applicants in the Greenwood, McCormick, and Abbeville county areas.  The May Week Celebration will take place at Trinity United Methodist Church, located at 547 Maxwell Avenue at 12:00 noon.

Lander confers more than 300 degrees at 159th commencement

Nearly 2,500 people packed Finis Horne Arena on May 15, 2019, to see 343 graduates receive degrees at Lander University’s 159th commencement.

It was one of Lander’s largest graduating classes, just under the mark set in spring 2014.

High School Seniors Comprise 6% of Piedmont Tech Spring Graduating Class

It happens more often than one might think, but it never ceases to impress when young high school students practically earn their higher education certificates and associate degrees before their diplomas. Twenty-three (23) of these young people did just that recently during Piedmont Technical College’s Spring Commencement Exercises. T’Laysha Creswell, a student soon to graduate from McCormick High School’s Middle College, is one of those young people, and just to raise the bar a bit, she also served as a commencement speaker! Talk about poise!

Area Lander students present research findings at national undergraduate conference

In mid-April, a group of Lander University students presented findings from their undergraduate research projects at the 2019 National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR).

The conference, the largest of its kind for undergraduate research in the world, was held on the campus of Kennesaw State University in Marietta, Ga. Each year, the conference attracts an estimated 4,000 student researchers from colleges and universities throughout the U.S.

Perrin Rickenbaker, of Greenwood; Amber Christine Lee, of Greenwood; Autumn Wofford, of Leesville; and Skyler Aldrich, of Conway, collaborated to examine the differences in how people react to traumatic events in their lives.

A Greenwood man was found guilty late Thursday night of a 2017 murder following a four-day trial at the Greenwood County Courthouse, 8th Circuit Solicitor David M. Stumbo announced Friday.

Greenwood man arrested in stabbing incident

One man is in jail following an incident early Monday morning on Lanham Street. Officers responded to a call of a stabbing incident on Lanham Street just after 5 am where they located a man sitting in front of the house, bleeding from multiple lacerations. The victim was immediately transported to Self Regional Healthcare for treatment and is expected to recover.

Piedmont Technical College (PTC) recently held a Scholarship Luncheon to recognize student recipients of dozens of PTC Foundation scholarships for 2019. This year’s winners of the Lonza Endowed Scholarship are Bianca Earl of Greenwood, Sarah Foster of Ware Shoals, Richard Gregory of Rock Hill, Téyanna Mathis of Greenwood, and Andrea Pozo of Simpsonville.

The Warner Lambert Company originally established this scholarship endowment in 1992. This scholarship is based on academic achievement and financial need.

Four Receive Sterilite Corporation Endowed Scholarship

Piedmont Technical College (PTC) recently held a Scholarship Luncheon to recognize student recipients of dozens of PTC Foundation scholarships for 2019. This year’s winners of the Sterilite Corporation Endowed Scholarship are Marquel Evans of Laurens, Michelle Freeman of Greenwood, Hailey Fuller of Ninety Six, and Zelea James of Ware Shoals.

Sterilite Corporation established a scholarship in 2010 to assist Greenwood and Laurens county residents who attend Piedmont Technical College. Preference is given to Sterilite employees and members of their immediate families. This scholarship is available to students showing academic achievement and financial need.

Riley Receives Carl Brock Vocational Rehabilitation Scholarship

Piedmont Technical College (PTC) recently held a Scholarship Luncheon to recognize student recipients of dozens of PTC Foundation scholarships for 2019. This year’s winner of the Carl Brock Vocational Rehabilitation Scholarship is Ashlee Riley of Greenwood.

The Greenwood Vocational Rehabilitation Advisory Board established this scholarship in 2000. In 2018, it was renamed to honor Mr. Carl Brock for his long association with Vocational Rehabilitation. Priority is given to VR clients who have successfully completed the South Carolina Manufacturing Certificate. If no client is selected, the scholarship is available to a full-time Human Services major with financial need. Additional criteria include residency in Greenwood, Abbeville, McCormick or Saluda County.

SC Festival of Flowers Calls for Photography Entries

The SC Festival of Flowers will again host a Photography Exhibition as a part of its 52nd annual SC Festival of Flowers celebration in Greenwood, SC.  “This exhibition is a highly anticipated event for local and regional photographers. After a brief break, it was brought back in 2017 as part of the 50th anniversary celebration. It is a long-standing tradition of the Festival,” said Exhibition Chair Kendall Adams.

Two categories are open for competition, advanced and basic.  Entries will be judged by qualified professional photographers prior to the show based on the print’s technical quality, aesthetic composition, emotional impact, and creative vision.  All submitted prints should be mounted and single matted for acceptance and hanging in the show.  There is a nominal fee of $20 for submission of up to 4 prints in one category.

PTC Employees Celebrate State Service Milestones

PTC Librarian Yvonne Hudgens and Director of Campus Police and Security Terry Ledford both reached a pinnacle at Piedmont Technical College when they were recognized for 40 years of service to the state and college. President Ray Brooks recognized them and 28 other employees who have reached a years-of-service milestone at a luncheon last month.

Lander to Hold Adjunct Faculty Networking and Hiring Fair

Those with a passion for developing minds and shaping the future are encouraged to attend a special networking and hiring fair for adjunct faculty positions at Lander University. Hosted by the Office of Academic Affairs, the event will take place Tuesday, May 21, from 5-7 p.m. at the University's Legion Hall, located at 806 Calhoun Avenue near Uptown Greenwood.

Lander’s part-time adjunct faculty positions are established on a semester basis to primarily meet academic needs for freshmen- and sophomore-level courses. Adjunct position schedules vary to include days, evenings, weekends and online classes. This event is intended to connect qualified adjunct applicants with departmental representatives.

Fuji Film supports The Greenwood Promise

The Greenwood Promise received a donation towards an original pledge commitment this week, with Fuji Film Manufacturing USA continuing its support to the program.

Todd Croker, President of Fuji Film Manufacturing USA, has been a loyal supporter of The Greenwood Promise, pledging $100,000 in 2016. Their annual donation of $20,000 has been critical in moving The Promise through Phase 1 and will support the initiative of the program into Phase 2.

Two PTC Students Receive Charles Baumeister Memorial Scholarship

Piedmont Technical College (PTC) recently held a Scholarship Luncheon to recognize student recipients of dozens of PTC Foundation scholarships for 2019. This year’s recipients of the Charles Baumeister Memorial Endowed Scholarship are Dorothy Holmes (right) of Greenwood and Linh Nguyen (not pictured) of Duncan. Holmes is pictured with Donor Representative Sally Baumeister.  

The scholarship was established in 1992 in memory of a longtime faculty member of the college who also served as dean of the Business and Industrial Divisions and vice president for Educational Affairs. Mr. Baumeister believed in education and in helping students. Family, friends, faculty and staff wanted to continue his work through this scholarship.

Westview Girl Power PEARLS visit State House
On Saturday, May 4, 2019 Westview Girl Power PEARLS took a field study trip to the SC State House and State Museum in Columbia, South Carolina.  The group was given a guided tour of the State House. This was the first time the group had the pleasure of visiting the facility.  They were awarded the opportunity to receive first-hand information regarding the history, the beautiful exterior and interior architectural features of the State House and the important roles of the executive and legislative branches of South Carolina Government.

The Greenwood Corvette Club Automotive Scholarship is available to a student majoring in the Automotive Technology program. Selection is based on financial need.
