Owens terminated from GCSO

Sandi Owens, an administrative assistant at the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office, has been terminated according to a press release from Sheriff Tony Davis.

Owens was named by multiple high ranking sources at GCSO as having misused taxpayer funds in her position at GCSO. Those sources confirmed last week that Owens had been suspended and Davis confirmed that an internal investigation would be taking place, as first reported on Sunday.

Davis said in an interview that the investigation may be turned over to SLED, depending upon the findings. Davis said in Tuesday’s press release that SLED would be investigating the incident and that any further questions would have to be directed to them.

Owens was suspended last week after sources say she met with county officials, including at least one member of county council, according to sources. Multiple sources also indicated that Owens was the subject of a lengthy executive session to discuss an employment matter at the end of last Tuesday’s administration and finance committee meeting. Both Toby Chappell, county manager, and Mark Allison, chairman of the county council, declined comment on the issue.

Owens began working at GCSO in January 2009 as an administrative assistant, according to the press release. The release also said that a preliminary audit is being conducted by an accounting firm out of Mauldin to look into “certain financial matters pertaining to the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office.”

Officials with SLED did not immediately return calls seeking comment on the investigation.

Ms. Davenport is correct! I'm a former deputy, not sure how she knows what she knows but it is all true!

Ms. Fede, I have lived happily in Greenwood County for nearly 20 years. I am a transplant from out of state, but I have made my home here and raised my family here and have done so pretty well. We don't use the phrase, "get your facts straight," and I can't say that I hear it routinely in my daily interactions personally, professionally or otherwise. If all you know of Greenwood and its people is what you read in the comments section of Greenwood Today, you have a narrow point of view. I guess I might find Greenwood strange if all I knew of the people was what I read in the comments on Greenwood Today. If Greenwood is so strange and annoying to you, then perhaps you should just read your own local news. Surely you have noticed that many of the comments on Greenwood Today are submitted by the same few people. You want to judge all of us and this lovely town on that basis? I guess we should all be glad that you don't live here.

I don't live in Greenwood but some members of my family do so I keep up to date with what goes on in the area. I can't help but to notice that the comment section always contains the phrase "get your facts straight..." Is that a Greenwood thing? Do you all just walk around saying that? That is the strangest little town I've ever visited by far. And by the way, I have my "facts straight".

Couldn't have happened to a better person. They need to investigate her other unprofessional behavior such as slander and defamation of character. Its amazing how unprofessionally the sheriff department handles certain situations. I am sure the sheriff had an idea of all her activities but it still doesn't excuse the fact that she is the one that chose to do some of the things she did.
