Gene Austin Latham - Greenwood

Gene Austin Latham, 82, resident of 117 Rosemont Dr., husband of Annette Smith Latham, died May 22, 2014 at Hospice House.

Born Anderson County, August 18, 1931, he was a son of the late Virgil Austin and Frances Telford Latham. Gene was a graduate of Ninety Six High School and the Greenwood College of Commerce.   He was a US Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict and retired as a sales representative for Lance, Inc.

A member of Harris Baptist Church, he was also a member of the King’s Men Sunday School of the church. Gene was an avid fisherman and he was known around town for his special sense of humor and was sometimes called “The Lance Cracker Man.”

Surviving in addition to his beloved wife of 58 years of the home are a son, Michael G. (Terri) Latham of Atlanta, GA; a daughter, Susan L. (Jeff) Blum of Greenville; five grandsons, Jonathan “Jon”, Nicholas “Nick” and Dustin Latham, Josh and Brice Blum; a brother, Jerry T. (Dot) Latham and a sister, Helen (David) Eanes of Waterloo; his special and dearly loved nieces and caregivers, Kathy Latham Boatwright and Lindi Latham Kastner. He loved all of his many nieces and nephews.

Gene was predeceased by two brothers, Herman Latham and Max Latham.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 2 PM at Harris Baptist Church with Rev. Frank Thomas officiating.

Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons along with David Perrin and Wayne Perrin.

Honorary escort will be member of the King’s Men Sunday School Class and the Joy Group of Harris Baptist Church along with Richard Skelton, Emory Bowen, Joe Worthington, Cecil Lowe, Don Goforth, Bobby Woods and Ronnie Oliver.

The body is at Blyth Funeral Home and will be placed in the church at 1:00 Sunday afternoon.

The family is at the home on Rosemont Dr. and will receive friends at the funeral home from 5 to 7 Saturday evening.

The family requests that flowers be omitted and memorials be made to Hospice Care of the Piedmont, 408 W. Alexander Ave., Greenwood, SC 29646 or to Harris Baptist Church, 300 Center St., Greenwood, SC 29649.
