Mrs. Eunice Goggins Baten, daughter of the late Ulysses and Mattie Butler Goggins was born September 17, 1920 in Cokesbury , South Carolina. She departed this life on August 12, 2012 after a brief illness. She was the widow of Joseph Alphorno Baten.
She was a member of St Paul AME Church, Cokesbury where she served faithfully as Treasurer of the Trustee Board, member of the choir and Sunday School.
She attended Elementary School in the public school system of Greenwood county and was a graduate of Brewer High School. She furthered her education at Morris Brown College in Sumter, SC and earned the Master’s Degree from South Carolina State University, Orangeburg, SC. Additional study at Howard University, Washington, DC; North Carolina Central University, Durham, NC; Allen University, Columbia, SC and Benedict College, Columbia.
She was a proficient and Caring Teacher at Sims High School, Union, SC; Brewer High School, Greenwood; and Northside Junior High School, Greenwood. She left a legacy of love and memories which will live on in the hearts of her students and those who knew her.
Mrs. Baten was inducted into the Brewer High School National Alumni Association’s Hall of Fame in 2004. She was affiliated with and held offices in numerous community and civic organizations including Zeta Phi Beta Sorority; Azzam Court#184Daughters of Isis Past; Regional Temple 1190I.P.B.O.E. of the World; Harmony Lodge#28 O.E.S; Gardenia Garden Club; S.C. State College National Alumni Association; Charmelette Club; R.B.H. Modernistic Bridge Club; National Council of Negro Women; N.E.A. and Retired Teachers Associations; Greenwood Chapters of Cancer Society and March of Dimes.
She leaves to cherish her memories; one son, Jim Baten of Donalds, SC; one sister, Mrs. Mary G. Miles of Mitchellville, MD; one brother, Dr. Horace Goggins of Rock Hill, SC; two grandsons, Austin Alphonso Baten and Kelcey Orlando Baten both of Greenwood, SC; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Deloris Goggins of Chester, SC and a host of nieces, nephews, cousin and friends.
Funeral services will be held Friday at Noon at St Paul AME Church; Cokesbury with Rev. Crystal Bryant officiating. Burial will be in Evening Star Cemetery. Pallbearers and Flower bearers will be Friends of the family
The body will be placed in the church at 11:00am
