Mrs. Dorothy “Dot” Virginia Franklin 88 widow of Joseph Franklin, Sr. and daughter of the late Beatrice Tompkins and niece of George and Ethel Dewey Harmon departed this life on November 25, 2012 at Petra Health and Rehab of McCormick, SC.
She was preceded in death by four sons, Joseph Franklin, Jr., George Carver Franklin, Arthur Eugene Franklin and Irvin Leon Franklin and a grandson Arthur JoeNardo Franklin.
She attended McCormick Public Schools and graduated from Bettis Academy & Jr. College Trenton, SC. She was employed by GLEAMNS Headstart and McCormick County Literacy Association.
She was a member of Bethany Baptist Church where she served on the Missionary Society and Senior Choir and was the Mother of the Church
Surviving are six grandchildren, Vonda, Torsha, Kevin, Tanya , Kristy and Lamarcus Franklin, eighteen great grandchildren; two gg grandchildren; three daughters in law; Henrietta Franklin, Laura Franklin and Earnestine Franklin; one god- daughter and other relatives and friends. She was the last survivor of her immediate family.
Dot was very active during the Civil Rights Movement. She marched with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and was a very active participant in voter registration.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1:00pm at Bethany Baptist Church with Rev. Robert J. Haskell Pastor and officiating assisted by Bishop David Tompkins presiding and Pastor Eric T. Butler and Pastor Annette Edwards.
Pallbearers and Flower bearers will be friends of the family.
Burial will be in the church cemetery
The body will be placed in the church at noon.
