Clara Mae Freeman Rushton, 90

Clara Mae Freeman Rushton, 90, resident of 581 Newberry Highway, Saluda, formerly of Ninety Six, widow of Dennis Franklin Rushton died Monday, February 18, 2013 at Saluda Nursing Center.

Born in Anderson County, April 15, 1922, she was a daughter of the late Esley and Nettie Mae Cason Freeman.  A graduate of Welcome High School in Greenville, Mrs. Rushton was retired after more than twenty years of service from Greenwood County, having worked with the County Magistrate’s Office and Tax Collector’s Office. 

Mrs. Rushton was a member of Temple Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school until her health declined.  She was formerly a member and longtime Sunday school teacher of Harris Baptist Church in Greenwood where she was affectionately known as “Clara Bear”.

Survivors include a son, Dr. James D. “Jim” Rushton and wife Judi of Ninety Six; daughter, Joyce Rushton Roark and husband Larry of Greenwood; grandchildren, Ellison Rushton Reid and husband Bill of Clemson, Angela Rushton of Greenville, James D. “Rus” Rushton, Jr. and wife Edie of Ninety Six, Billy F. Fletcher and wife Louise of Greenville, Denise Balentine and husband Danny of Ninety Six, Chris Fletcher and wife Nichols of Columbia and Frankie Fletcher of Ninety Six; sixteen great-grandchildren; sister, Elizabeth Bowers and husband Bill of Seneca; brother, Curtis Freeman and wife Leodis of Piedmont; sisters-in-law, Mrs. James E. (Christine) Freeman of Piedmont and Mrs. W.T. (Marie) Freeman of Marietta, SC.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 2:00 PM from the Blyth Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Johnny McDaniel, Reverend Michael Bowers and Reverend Frank Thomas officiating.  Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be James D. Rushton, Jr., Chris Fletcher, Frankie Fletcher, Billy Fletcher, Danny Balentine, Bill Reid, Ryan Balentine and Hunter Fletcher.

Honorary escort will be Bob Rushton, Pete Rushton, Bill Rushton, Gaines Bowers, John Bowers, Philip Bowers, Ed Bowers, Harold Butler, Thomas Crawford, J.W. Timms and Walt Pruitt.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 1:00 PM until the service hour at the funeral home and at other times at their respective homes.
