Maude Lee Powell Harvley, 71, of 4612 Highway 178 South, widow of Elmer Jordan “E. J.” Harvley, passed away on Tuesday, September 3, 2013 at Hospice House.

Born in Greenwood County on July 6, 1942, she was a daughter of the late Cooper “Buster” and Eula Mae Chavis Powell.  She was employed by Monsanto for thirteen years, then in 1972, she and E. J. took over Harvley’s Scrap Metal, which was established in 1960, and built it into the thriving recycling business that it is today.

She was a loyal, long time member of Augusta Highway Baptist Church.

She leaves behind her three children, Ronnie Harvley (Kathy), Danny Harvley (Jenny) and Tammie Harvley, all of Greenwood; seven grandchildren, Sherrill Williams, Tara Harvley, Jennifer Harvley, Ashley Harvley, Maggie Harvley, Matthew Harvley and Virginia Philbeck and fourteen great grandchildren.  Maude Lee was affectionately known as “Mama” and “Grandmama” by countless others due to her open home and loving, generous heart.  She is also survived by a loving sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy “Dot” and Carl Reynolds of Swansea and a niece, Darlene Neese and nephew, Harvey Reynolds, both of Swansea; two uncles, Jesse Chavis, Jr. (Susie) and George Chavis (Linda), both of North, SC.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, J. C. Powell and a grandson, Kyle Taylor Harvley.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Harley Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Kenny Griffin and the Rev. Marty Dorn officiating.  Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be David Stockman, Harvey Reynolds, Matthew Harvley, Wayne Neese, Pablo Suarez and William Turner.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m.

The family is at the home.

Memorials may be made to HospiceCare of the Piedmont, 408 W. Alexander Avenue, Greenwood, SC 29646; American Cancer Society, PO Box 1741, Greenwood, SC 29648 (www.cancer.org) or to Augusta Highway Baptist Church, 3720 Highway 25 South, Greenwood, SC 29646.
