Otto McDonald Jr. - Greenwood

Henry Otto McDonald, Jr., 88, resident of 612 Pembroke Road, husband of Betty Rose McDonald, died October 15, 2013, at Hospice House.

Born July 17, 1925, in Greenwood County, he was a son of the late H. Otto, Sr. and Sarah Mitchell McDonald.  He attended Greenwood High School, and volunteered for service with the US Marine Corps during World War II, where he was promoted to Master Sargent before his 18th birthday.  That appointment made him the youngest US Marine Corps Master SGT at that time.  He participated in the Battle of Okinawa.   Mr. McDonald attended Clemson University before transferring to Baltimore Tech.  After graduation from Baltimore Tech he remained to teach radio engineering before returning to South Carolina.

Upon his return to SC, he taught radio engineering part time at Greenville Technical College night school.  He became vice president of radio station WELP in Easley, SC and WHPB in Belton, SC, and later became president and general manager of WELP and WELP, FM in Toccoa, GA.  He worked diligently with civic activities and was named president of the Easley Chamber of Commerce and later the Toccoa Chamber of Commerce.  He also served as president of Georgia Association of Broadcasters.   A former resident of Easley, he retired in 1985, while residing in Toccoa and once again returned to Greenwood.

For more than 50 years he broadcast Little Country Church, a daily devotional on local radio.

He was a member and the Elder Emeritus of the Hodges Presbyterian Church, where he also served as Sunday school teacher and lay speaker.

Surviving in addition to his wife of the home are two sisters, Mrs. Dot Wrenn of Greenwood and Mrs.Josephine Jones of Greenville; four brothers, Thomas McDonald of Clover, Robert McDonald of Charlotte, Wayne McDonald of Hilton Head and Hiram McDonald of Toccoa, GA.

Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 pm Friday at Hodges Presbyterian Church with Rev. Robert Piephoff and Rev. Joel Kelly officiating. 

Burial will be in Oakbrook Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be nephews, Robbie Angel, Kelly McDonald, Brian Henry Adams, Eddie Adams, Matthew Adams, Bryson Cobb and Brad Pettigrew. 

Honorary escort will be Elders of Hodges Presbyterian Church along with Jim Bohler, Gordon Vinson, Willie Hendley, Robert Hendley and Troy Douglas.

The family is at the home and  will receive friends at the graveside immediately following the service.
