James Thomas “Sam” Sargent, 88, resident of Emerald Gardens, widower of Wilma Bryant Sargent, went to be with his Heavenly Father surrounded by his family, Friday, November 8, 2013 at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Greenwood County, January 24, 1925, he was as son of the late Thomas L. and Bernice Elrod Sargent. He was a 1943 graduate of Ninety Six High School and was a US Army Veteran of WW II, having served in the 3rd Infantry Division. Sam began his textile career with Abney Mills in Greenwood where he was an active member of Durst Avenue Church of God and was Scout Master of Grendel Troop #58 for many years. In 1968, he relocated to Anderson with Abney Mills and retired from Abney’s Anderson plant. He was more recently retired from Spring Industry, Wamsutta Plant, in Anderson.
While residing in Anderson, he was an active member of Orrville Pentecostal Holiness Church where he served as choir director, deacon, trustee and as teacher of the Men’s Bible Class.
On July 1, 2013, he relocated back to Greenwood and moved his church membership back to Durst Avenue Church of God.
Surviving are three daughters, Linda (Jerry) Davis of Greenwood, Becky (Donnie) Davis of Ninety Six and Djuana Dru Sargent and her friend Perry Burton of Anderson; two sisters, Laura S. Fortson and Jennifred S. Trotter, both of Greenwood; a brother, Gene (Betty) Sargent of Greenwood; eight grandchildren, Candi Gresham, Jr Davis, Hope (Glenn) Beauford, Donna (Tony) Gunter, Paula (Brett) Simpson, Charity (Chad) Caron, James L. “Sam” (Raigon) Watkins and John (Katie) Davis; seventeen great-grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Max T. Sargent.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 PM Monday at Durst Avenue Church of God with Rev. James L. “Sam” Watkins, Rev. Hayes Riddle and Mr. Tommy Ray Fortner officiating.
Burial with Military Honors will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Wil Ashcraft, Tanner Watkins, Chad Caron, Brett Simpson, Glenn Beauford, Michael Dylan Gresham and Dylan Davis.
Honorary escort will be Alec Watkins, Houston Mitchell, Alix Gresham, Dylan Beauford, Jadon Watkins and Graeme Simpson.
The body is at Blyth Funeral Home and will be placed in the church at 1 PM Monday.
The family is at the home of Linda and Jerry Davis, 105 Northgate St. and will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:30 to 7:30 Sunday evening.
