Dr. Richard Shirley Fox, III, 70, resident of Wesley Commons, formerly of Lexington, KY, Orlando, FL and Gainesville, FL, died February 1, 2014 at Hospice House.
Born February 20, 1943, he was the son of the late Richard Shirley Jr. and Jane Farmer Fox. He received a BS and MS in Biology at the University of Florida in Gainesville and received a PhD in Zoology from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Dr. Fox was a Professor of Biology at Lander University from 1977 until his retirement in 2009. He authored “Seashore Animals of the Southeast” and “Invertebrate Zoology, a functional evolutionary approach”. He was the recipient of the Outstanding Professor Award from Lander College in 1985 and in 2011 Lander University dedicated The Richard S. Fox Ecology Laboratory in his honor.
Survivors include two sisters, Mary Fox Calhoun of Liberty, MO and Rebecca Wallace Fox of Whittier, NC; two nephews, Matthew Terry Calhoun of San Francisco, CA and Thomas Neal Calhoun of Ashville, NC; and three great-nieces, Ella Jane Novak and Neva Florence Calhoun, both of San Francisco, CA and Azalea Rain Calhoun of Ashville, NC.
A memorial celebration and reception will be conducted Monday at 3:00PM at Asbury Hall with Reverend Carol Peppers Wray officiating.
The family is at the home, 105 Lovely Lane in Wesley Commons.
In lieu of flowers the family request memorials be made to the Jane Farmer Fox Biology Scholarship at Lander University, 300 Stanley Avenue, Greenwood, SC 29469.
