Oswald Lawton Gardner, 92, devoted husband of Mary Edna Connelly Gardner, died Friday, March 23, 2018 at Self Regional Medical Center.
He was a loving and dedicated husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He loved the outdoors, his farm and spending time with his family and friends.
Born in Greenwood County, June 14, 1925, he was a son of the late Louie Dargon Gardner and Ruby Calvert Gardner. Mr. Gardner was a graduate of Greenwood High School and retired as the Assistant Chief of the City of Greenwood Fire Department after 32 years of service. Mr. Gardner was the last living member of the SC Fire Chief’s Association. He was a member of Ninety Six First Baptist Church where he had served as Deacon and achieved Deacon Emeritus status. He was also a member of the Men’s Sunday School class. He spent his life serving God and always putting others first. Mr. Gardner was a lifelong farmer and member of the SC Beef Producer’s Association.
Surviving in addition to his wife of 72 years are two children, Cathy Patterson and husband George of McCormick and Bill Gardner and wife Lisa of Ninety Six along with five grandchildren Brian Patterson, Amy (Heyward) Hilliard, Anna (Chad) Morgan, Jamie (Rob) Christuski, Emily (Ashley) Miller, Mandy (Ben) Bussey and fifteen great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Monday at Ninety Six First Baptist Church with Rev. Chuck Sprouse officiating.
Burial with Firefighter Honors will be in Rehoboth United Methodist Church Cemetery
Pallbearers will be Brian Patterson, Tyler Gardner, Heyward Hilliard, Chad Morgan, Ben Bussey, Ashley Miller, Lawton Hilliard and Roy Keller. Honorary pallbearers are Greenwood Firefighters past and present.
The family is at the home on Red Bud Lane. Visitation will be from 4-6 pm on Sunday at Blyth Funeral Home.
