Lander tennis teams open Peach Belt Tournament on Thursday

The Lander men’s and women’s tennis teams learned Tuesday morning of their first-round opponents in this week’s Peach Belt Conference Tournament when the brackets were released by the league office.

The tournament, which is being hosted by Francis Marion University, will be held April 17-19 at the Dr. Eddie Floyd Tennis Center in Florence, S.C.

In the men’s tournament, Lander, Armstrong Atlantic and Columbus State all finished the regular season as co-champions with identical 9-1 conference records and their seeds were determined by a series of coin flips.

Lander will be the No. 2 seed and will face seventh-seeded Francis Marion at 11 a.m., Thursday. The Lander/Francis Marion winner will advance to the semifinals to face the No. 3 Armstrong/No. 6 Flagler winner at noon Friday. The championship match is set for noon Saturday.

In the men’s national rankings, Armstrong is No. 5, Lander No. 7, Columbus State No. 14, Georgia College No. 21, GRU Augusta No. 23, Francis Marion No. 29, North Georgia No. 35, and Flagler No. 42.

In the women’s bracket, Lander earned the No. 6 seed and will face third-seeded Flagler at 8 a.m. Thursday. The Lander/Flagler winner will advance to Friday’s 8 a.m. semifinals to meet either No. 2 Columbus State or No. 7 Montevallo. The championship match will be at 8 a.m. Saturday.

In the women’s national rankings, Armstrong is No. 2, Columbus State No. 6, Flagler No. 24, Georgia College No. 26, Lander No. 40, and Francis Marion No. 41.
