Lander men's basketball signs Jareal Smith

GREENWOOD – Lander head men's basketball coach Jeff Burkhamer announced today that Jareal Smith, a 6-3 wing from Savannah, Ga., will be transferring to join the Bearcats program for the 2012-13 season.

Smith is transferring to Lander from NCAA Division I Radford University, where he averaged 9.0 points and 3.0 rebounds per game last season while shooting 33 percent from the field and 77 percent from the free throw line.

"Jareal is a terrific wing player who can also play some point," said Burkhamer. "Smith is a seasoned player having played at the Division I level for two years and will come to Lander fully prepared to compete in the Peach Belt Conference. "He is a scorer with a scorer's mentality. He pushes the ball up the floor, shoots the three, gets to the rim and makes plays for others."

Smith, who scored 22 points against the Cincinnati Bearcats and had a season-high 25 against Winthrop University last year, reached double figures in 12 games and was named to the Big South All-Freshman Team.

Smith will be counted on to replace All-American Dwight Tolbert. "Jareal gives us another quality guard," said Burkhamer. "He is coming in with college game experience and knows what it takes to play at thislevel."

As a prep at Johnson (Ga.) High School, Smith was named the Region 3-AAAAA Player of the Year.

"I feel this is a great opportunity for me academically and athletically," said Smith, who plans to major in physical education. "I wanted to go to a program where I could play right away and make an immediate impact."
