NWTF Expects another great turnout for Turkey Shoot
EDGEFIELD, S.C. — Recreational and experienced sporting clays shooters from across the country are primed for the National Wild Turkey Federation’s (NWTF) annual Turkey Shoot at the Meadows National Gun Club in Forsyth, Georgia. The National Sporting Clays Association-sanctioned Mega Blast Shoot that regularly draws more than 500 participants is scheduled for August 15–17.

Gators take second place at Carolina YMCA Swim League Summer Championship
The Greenwood Gators recenlty traveled to Pickens, South Carolina July 19-20 to compete in the Carolina YMCA Swim League Championships.  While the first day was a cold and rainy July Saturday, complete with a power outage, the Gators had several great swims.

Greenwood YMCA Gators making final prep for Summer Championship State Swim Meet July 19-20

The Greenwood Family YMCA’s Gators Swim Team is quite possibly the team to beat at this weekend’s Carolina YMCA Swim League Summer Championship. The team is riding a third place finish at the Winter Championship, their best finish in the current league format. Head Coach Tom Karel and Assistants Tyler Will, Kendrick Anderson and Christen Messer are headed to the Pickens YMCA this weekend with 43 swimmers.

ECE Track and Field athletes qualifies for AAU Junior Olympic District Qualifiers in Iowa
Four Emerald City Elite Track and Field athletes have made it to the AAU Nationals held in Des Moines, Iowa on July 28 through August 2, 2014. Congratulations to Javeon Lagroon, Tongelayah Lagroon, Gracen Price and Carrel Richards. Their journey began in Hopkins, South Carolina.

Team Rawlings places second in Nationals

Team Rawlings 9U recently placed 2nd in the Baseball Nationals tournament in Myrtle Beach, SC.  They defeated teams from Texas, New York, Florida, and Georgia to advance to the championship game.

Seniors represented area well in North South Softball Game

Tiaria Norman of Emerald High School and Anna Fennell of Ninety Six High School were both chosen to play in the North/South All-Stars games at the University of South Carolina Aiken.  The games were held on Wednesday June 18th and Thursday June 19th.  Both girls were major contributors to the 2A/3A North All-Star Team.

Cambridge Academy Athletic Banquet

The Cambridge Academy Athletic Banquet was held on May 14, 2014. The banquet was held to honor student athletes in grades 5 – 12 who participated in Cross Country, Volleyball, Cheerleading, Basketball, Tennis, Track and Field and Golf during the 2013-14 academic year.

Elite 9 finish 2nd in major tournament

Elite 9 Baseball-Blue, a 13 and Under Majors baseball team based out of Greenwood, SC just returned from playing in the Omaha Slumpbuster and Omaha NIT, in Omaha, Nebraska.  The competition included a total of 219 teams from all over the country, 56 teams in their age bracket, and 24 teams in their division.

Abbeville 10U All Stars win Sub-District Tournament

The Abbeville 10U All Stars went undefeated in the Dixie Youth Sub-District Tournament this past weekend. They have advanced to the District Tournament which will be held June 27th through July 2nd in Batesburg.

GALL 8u All Stars advance to state

The Greenwood Abbeville Little League 8 and under earned their way to the SC State 8u tournament to be held in Irmo on June 26-30th.  The team’s record was 3-2 with a huge 4-0 victory over Easley in the last game.

Greenwood Red Sox win 12u GALL Championship
The Greenwood Red Sox won the 12-and-under Greenwood Abbeville Little League (GALL) Majors Division championship on Friday, June 6. The Red Sox finished as regular season champions with a record of 11-1 and also tournament champions, winning all three of their games.

Drew Seymour signs with Brewton-Parker College

Drew Seymour of Lincolnton, Ga., recently signed a scholarship contract in the school’s media center in the presence of family members, friends, coaches, teachers and administrators.

After pitching and playing first base for the Red Devils, he will pitch for the Barons at Brewton-Parker College as well.

Greenwood youth becomes SC AAU Javelin record holder

Eleven year-old Carrel Richards captured the Javelin record by throwing his purple javelin 23.39m (76.09 feet) at the Junior Olympic District Qualifiers in Hopkins, SC on May, 31st. The previous record of 17.65m was set in 2013.

STATE CHAMPS

The Ninety Six Wildcat baseball team capped off a special 2014 season by clinching the AA state championship Tuesday night in a game that was delayed due to weather.

Westview Middle School Athletic Awards Banquet
Westview Middle School recently held it's annual Athletic Awards Night.  All athletes were recognized and presented certificates as appreciation for all the hard work it takes to be a successful student/athlete.  In addition, each sport gave out some special awards.

The Emerald High School tennis team will be advancing to round 3 in the playoffs after defeating Clinton High 4-2.  They play next at EHS on Monday, May 12.

Mathews Elementary receives tennis equipment donation

The Greenwood Area Tennis Association presents Mathews Elementary School PE Teacher Rebecca Green with beginner’s tennis equipment.  The equipment, consisting of 15 racquets, 2 18' portable nets, a case of low compression balls, and line markers were provided through funds from a private donor.  The equipment will be utilized to introduce tennis to elementary aged students.

Cambridge Academy 8th Grader Wins SCISA A-AA State Varsity Track and Field Championship in Discus

Three Cambridge Academy Middle School students recently participated in the SCISA Varsity Track and Field State Championship Meet. Gretchen Wanning (8th Grader), Leah Mosher (8th Grader) and Gracen Price (7th Grader) earned the right to participate in the championship meet based on qualifying standards met at previous events throughout the Track and Field season.

Lady Wildcats win 2014 District II Championship

Congratulations to the Ninety Six Lady Wildcat softball team for defeating Pendleton 3-0 in the final game to win the title.  The Wildcats advance to the Upper State playoffs with a starting game against Crescent this Saturday, 11am at NSHS.

Emerald Vikings Tennis team fell to Daniel with a 4-2 score on May 4, 2014.  Their next playoff game will be today against Greenville and will be played a the Greenwood Country Club.

Ninety Six Angler May 3 tournament results
Ninety Six Wildcat Anglers held a tournament on Lake Greenwood this past Saturday. The blast off started at 7 and they returned at 12 noon. The blast off was a little cool at the start but warmed up nicely. The water temperature is 72 and the fishing is still in spawn and post spawn patterns.

John de la Howe Spring Golf Tournament Results

The John de la Howe School Alumni Association held its spring golf tournament Saturday at Hickory Knob State Park Resort Golf Course in McCormick. The first place team with a score of 14 under par was, from left: Travis Bullard, Bob Johnson, Trevor Brooks and Craigh Clark. A total of 39 golfers competed in the captain’s choice tournament, a benefit for students at the 217-year-old John de la Howe School, which provides a safe place for the children of South Carolina to heal, grow and make lasting changes.
