Emerald Vikings standout infielder Rush Owen will play be playing college baseball at USC Sumter this fall after signing a National Letter of Intent Thursday afternoon.

“I’ve worked all my life for this,” Owen said of signing the NLI. “I’m glad it’s done. I’m really looking forward to getting down there and getting to work.”

Vikings head coach Stanley Moss said Owen was given the nickname “Spark Plug” by his teammates during the high school season due to his scrappy play.

“Rush (Owen) is the kind of player every coach would like to have on his team,” Moss said. “He’s a really high energy player and other players really feed off of that.”

It’s that can-do, all-hustle attitude that Owen believes will serve him well at the next level.

“I’m a really scrappy player,” Owen said. “I’m not going to overpower anyone at the plate, but I’m really good in the field and I’m going to go full speed all the time.”

It’s not Owen’s physical abilities that stand out, according to Moss, as much as his mental abilities.

“Owen really has a good understanding of the game of baseball,” Moss said. “He understands situations and what to do on every play. His knowledge of the game is beyond his years.”
