Mr. Versatile
Adams does it all for Eagles

Jacob Lethco
Staff Writer

GREENWOOD, SC – When talking to Greenwood’s Markevious Adams, the sophomore just looks like an athlete.

Adams, a 6-foot-4 rangy athlete, was a starting wide receiver for the Division II, 4A State Championship football team. Adams has since joined the basketball team, where he serves as a starting forward in the Eagles’ frontcourt.

“He is very aggressive,” Greenwood Head Coach Jim Still said. “He attacks the basket and his very good in transition. His length helps him on defense; he’s an excellent rebounder on offense and defense. He’s just a very, very good young player.”

The sophomore forward is currently averaging 11.0 points per game, including a career high 22 points against perennial 4A power Hillcrest. While he is admittedly more comfortable as a perimeter player, Adams explained that he has had to spend more time in the post, out of necessity.

“I am more comfortable on the perimeter,” Adams said. “Since I am so tall, the coaches ask me to play down low in the post a lot, so I just try to do the best I can down there.”

Still explained that Adams’ ability to play both inside and out has been essential for his team’s success.

“I think he is more comfortable playing outside,” Still said. “Out of necessity, we have had to play him inside a good bit, but he has done a tremendous job in both aspects.”

Adams’ versatility jumps out most on the defensive end of the floor, where he is able to guard multiple positions.

“If I’m guarding bigger guys down low, I’m able to use my quickness,” Adams said. “With smaller guys outside, I’m so long and tall that it’s harder to get around me.”

The Eagles currently hold a 4-6 record, going 1-4 in Region I-4A play. In spite of the record, they have remained competitive in the majority of their contests. According to the Eagles’ sophomore star, they remain optimistic, in hopes of turning things around as they approach the remainder of the 2012-2013 season.

“We just have to stay confident in our offense,” Adams said. “If he help each other on defense, keep working hard, and have each other’s backs through everything, we all think we can get things turned around.”

Mock's commitment is truly paying off! Long, athletic, smooth..this kid's "got it going on"..on the field and definitely on the court. But this comes as no shock to anyone who has known him long enough..you could see it blossoming in middle school. He has tremendous support and most importantly, this is a GREAT young man! There is nothing other than success to expect~!
