South Carolina Premieres "Absence" Play (Alzheimer's Education)

Alzheimer's disease is the 6th leading cause of death in the US, yet remains largely ignored by those not directly impacted. While there is no cure, education remains the best defense.

Eden Terrace, a leader in both Alzheimer's care and advocacy, has partnered with Spartanburg Little Theater, Chapman Cultural Center and the Alzheimer's Association to deliver a moving and powerful performance of "Absence," an award-winning play written by Peter M. Floyd, whose mother suffers from the disease. It is an exciting and surprising play about aging, power, grace and imagination, focusing not only on the character suffering from Alzheimer's, but also on the impact of her family, physician and friends. "I have a personal stake in this play," said Playwright Peter M. Floyd. "My mother is suffering from Alzheimer's Disease. Writing this has been something of an attempt for me to explore what the world must be like for someone whose very sense of reality is in flux, a way to understand what my mother is experiencing."

This performance is scheduled for March 24, 2014. Tickets are free, but must be reserved in advance online via www.eventbrite.com, or by contacting an event sponsor. Doors open for a cocktail reception at 6:00pm, where vendors featuring experts in the field and related services will provide much-needed resources for attendees. The play will run from 6:45pm-8:45pm.

Because the play is so stirring and thought provoking, sponsors will provide a special educational seminar on the morning of March 25, 2014 from 10:00am-12:30pm. Vendors will return to provide resources, along with a presentation by an expert in the field. A panel discussion will follow with dementia resource experts, including ample time for questions and answers between the audience and experts.

Presenting/partnering sponsors include Chapman Cultural Center, Spartanburg Little Theatre, the Alzheimer’s Association and Southeastern Printing. Additional sponsorships are still available which include vendor displays at each event. Please contact Tami Bollerman for sponsorship information.
