The Southern Crappie Tournament Trail held its final tournament of the 2012-2013 season on Feb. 16 on Lake Greenwood. The tournament was also the last one to be held by the group as they will be closing their doors for good due to the ailing health of a family member of Southern Crappie Tournament Trail president Melissa Hinson.
Anglers set out on Lake Greenwood at 7 a.m. in spite of the frigid temperatures and freezing rain. They poured into the parking lot at Charlie B’s for the weigh-in at 3 p.m.
Several anglers predicted that winning the one day crappie tournament would take between 11 and 13 pounds with the seven fish limit, including will Hinson of Cassatt, S.C. Hinson fishes crappie tournaments across the U.S. and recently placed third at a national crappie tournament in Florida. Hinson has also fished a number of tournaments on Lake Greenwood.
Chad Gilbert of Greenville has also experienced success on Lake Greenwood, winning his first SCTT tournament there in Jan. 2011. Gilbert also predicted a weight of 11 pounds would be necessary to win the tournament.
Both anglers were fairly close, as Alan Stockman, of Prosperity, S.C., and Eddy Strickland, of North, S.C., took first in the tournament with a weight of 10.61 pounds. Their big fish was 1.96 pounds. Stockman and Strickland took home $300 in cash, a Minn-Kota trolling motor and had teir big fish mounted by Brent’s Taxidermy.
