United Way seeks sponsors for families

Brian King
Staff Writer

GREENWOOD, SC – The United Way of Greenwood and Abbeville Counties is looking for people in the Greenwood and Abbeville areas to sponsor families that are in need this Christmas.

“It’s the time of year where people are shopping, giving, eating and getting together with family,” said Lindsay Tyner, a case manager for United Way. “It’s also the time of year when we see children without coats, who don’t know when they’ll get the next hot meal, and when we see parents who can’t put presents under the tree.”

Tyner and United Way have already prescreened several families in the area that need help this Christmas and they are seeking some of the area’s generous people to help meet that need.

“Fortunately, through United Way I’ve seen first-hand that the people in this community are generous and kind,” Tyner said. “People in Greenwood see a need and meet it.  United Way exists to help those in need and if there is a way we can help at Christmas, we are blessed to do that.”

Anyone interested in sponsoring a family should contact Tyner by calling (864) 229-0123. Tyner said that the United Way has identified these families as having a need, but were forced to tell them that they could not guarantee any assistance. The assistance is dependent upon other families stepping up as sponsors. Tyner also said that these families missed other deadlines for help from other agencies in the area.
