Fight leads to arrest over alleged rape

GREENWOOD, SC – A man was arrested for allegedly attempting to rape a woman early Sunday morning after police were called out for a fight in progress.

According to a report from the Greenwood police Department, police responded to W Creswell Avenue in response to a call about a rape. When they arrived, they observed the alleged victim, a 17-year-old female, on the porch crying. When asked what was wrong, she replied, “He raped me.”

While speaking with the victim, police were advised by dispatch that the mother of the victim was at 305 Lindsey Avenue with the alleged perpetrator of the crime, later identified as Devon Malik Coleman, 17. When police arrived at the residence, there was fight involving multiple subjects, according to the report. Police were able to break up the fight.

According to the report, the victim says that she was watching television with her cousin and Coleman. The victim told police that she was tired and went to lie down in her aunt’s bedroom. The victim then told police that Coleman entered the bedroom on three separate occasions, each just a few minutes apart. The first two times, the victim told police, Coleman lay next to her in the bed and began kissing her and touching her on top of her clothing. The victim told police that Coleman left after she told him to stop the first two times. The third time, the victim says, Coleman pinned her arms to the bed and began using his legs to attempt to spread her legs. The victim told police that she began fighting back and screaming for her cousin to help. The victim told police that Coleman could not get his pants down because of her struggling, but did put his hand down her pants. The victim’s cousin heard the screaming and told Coleman to leave, which he did, according to the report.

According to the report, the victim’s cousin could hear what he thought was laughter, but said he could not be sure because the volume on the TV was up. The victim’s cousin told police that when he finally went back there and told Coleman it was time to leave Coleman left the house and went home.

The report states that the victim went to the emergency room to be examined for injuries.

Coleman has been charged with first degree criminal sexual conduct. His bond has been set at $20,000 cash or surety.

Whether they had intercourse or not, he still put his hands down her pants without her agreement. That should stand for something. I do however agree that if she is fabricating some of her story, she needs to get it straight and now!

Why would this young lady scream he raped her, when no sex actually took place? She is 17 yrs old so I know she knows what sexual intercourse is & what rape is. This is something that can't be taken lightly & can tarnish this young man for the rest of his life! Not saying what he did was right, however if the cousin thought he heard laughter it is possible he did & at the last minute the young lady decided she didn't want to go through with the act, if this is the case she needs to say that!

Everyone is innocent until proven guilty. But if he did this, I really hope he gets what he deserves. He doesn't understand the damage he has probably caused this girl. Prayers go out to her!
