Greenwood Chamber hosts annual celebration and recognition banquet

GREENWOOD, SC – The Greenwood Chamber of Commerce hosted their 2013 Annual Meeting, entitled “Salute,” Friday night at the Little River Multicultural Complex. In addition to the annual “Passing of the Gavel,” two local residents were honored for their service to the Greenwood community.

Jim Medford was presented the Order of the Crescent, South Carolina’s highest award for volunteer service. Medford has served as CEO of Aaron Industries in Clinton since 1997 and is the owner of The Links at Stoney Point. Congressman Jeff Duncan was on hand to present the award to Medford for his work with Healthy Learners. Duncan also presented Medford with a letter from Governor Nikki Haley.

The 2012 Hall of Fame inductee was Benjamin “Ben” Lawrence, the man behind many of Greenwood’s commercial real estate development projects. Friends and associates of Lawrence all recognized his vision in the real estate industry as well as the economic development of Greenwood. Some of Lawrence’s projects include Park Plaza, where county offices are now located, and the renovation of the old Greenwood High School into apartments. Lawrence joins his father, Jack, in the Hall of Fame and the two are the only father-son tandem to be so honored.

Frank Wideman, president of the Self Family Foundation and 2012 chairman of the Greenwood Chamber of Commerce board of directors, passed the gavel to incoming chairman and chief operating officer of Greenwood Capital Associates Michael Nix.

Art Youngblood and JAY Productions provided beach and dance music following the banquet.
