GREENWOOD- In 2010, Shonna Vines was part of a group that participated in monthly servant hood projects that took place throughout Greenwood County. After being inspired to take the event to a “bigger scale,” as Vines explained, the idea of an annual Volunteer Fair came to surface. Three years later, the third annual “Match Your Mission” Volunteer Fair was held at the Greenwood Mall Tuesday afternoon.
“We were able to turn it into an annual event, where each year we have hosted 35 to 40 non-profit Greenwood community agencies,” Vines said. “The Greenwood community is able to come in and sign up to volunteer in different areas.”
Vines is hoping that the event’s continued growth will benefit all participants involved.
“We are very honored to be a part of helping non-profit community agencies of Greenwood gather more volunteers,” Vines said. “Most of them struggle, because they are usually smaller and don’t have the means to go out and get more volunteers. This is just a practical way for us to provide avenues for the people of Greenwood to volunteer for these agencies.”
As Vines reflected on the completion of the third annual Volunteer Fair, she explained that her ultimate hope is for the event to have the largest turnout that they have had thus far.
“We had 220 volunteer slots filled last year and are hoping to top that this year,” Vines said. “The mall has been gracious in letting us host the event here. The mall is a great central location and the turnout has been a lot larger than we have had in the past.”
