SC Governor, Greenwood Mayor declare the month of May Preeclampsia Awareness Month

Greenwood, SC – South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley and Greenwood Mayor Welborn Adams have issued proclamations that recognize May as Preeclampsia Awareness Month. The proclamations were presented to Sara Collins, the coordinator for The Promise Walk for Preeclampsia that will be held in Greenwood this June. The event will feature a family friendly one mile walk, hot dog and bake sale, raffle tickets and prizes and much more.

Sara and her team of volunteers, many of whom are preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome survivors, are raising awareness about preeclampsia in Greenwood and surrounding areas.

About Preeclampsia: Thousands of women and babies die or get very sick each year from a dangerous condition called preeclampsia, a life-threatening disorder that occurs only during pregnancy and the postpartum period. Preeclampsia and related disorders such as HELLP syndrome and eclampsia are most often characterized by a rapid rise in blood pressure that can lead to seizure, stroke, multiple organ failure and death of the mother and/or baby. Preeclampsia occurs in 5-8% of all pregnancies with at least 200,000 women affected each year in the U.S. Globally, it is a leading cause of death, taking the lives of 76,000 mothers and 500,000 babies.

About the Preeclampsia Foundation: The Promise Walk for Preeclampsia™ supports the mission of the Preeclampsia Foundation as we provide patient support and education, raise public awareness, catalyze research and improve health care practices for millions of mothers and their babies every year who are impacted by preeclampsia and related hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.
