A Greenwood man will be spending the next 12 years behind bars for a sexual assault. Travis DeShawn Nicholson, 41, pleaded guilty Monday to second degree criminal sexual conduct with a Minor. Assistant Solicitor Elizabeth White represented the state, and Circuit Defender Janna Nelson represented the defendant.
Nicholson was a friend of the 15-year-old victim’s mother. He began making sexual comments and advances toward the victim over the summer of 2011. The defendant’s behavior became progressively worse until one night in October of 2011. Nicholson waited until everyone in the house was asleep before he entered the victim’s bedroom, held her down and sexually assaulted her.
Circuit Court Judge Frank R. Addy, Jr. sentenced Nicholson to 12 years in prison. The defendant was exposed to a maximum sentence of 20 years. Assistant Solicitor White said that Nicholson must serve at least 85 percent of his sentence and must register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.
Stumbo praised the outstanding work done by Assistant Solicitor White, Assistant Solicitor Cam Morrow and the Greenwood Police Department, particularly Investigator Mike Dixon, in getting the case prepared for trial.
“We are extremely pleased to have another sex offender off the streets of Greenwood,” said Stumbo. “We will continue to work with law enforcement to protect our families, and make sure that the victims of these horrific crimes receive justice.”
