A Greenwood man wanted for failing to return a rental car was arrested in Mauldin following a traffic stop and returned to Greenwood on Wednesday.
Officials with the Greenwood Police Department say that Anthony Leon Copeland, 58, was arrested in Mauldin following a traffic stop. Copeland’s name was entered in NCIC following an Oct. 2012 incident in which he reportedly failed to return a rental car, officials said. GPD officers picked Copeland up in Mauldin and brought him to the Greenwood County Detention Center on Wednesday.
According to a GPD report, Copeland rented a white Toyota Corolla from Hartfield’s Car Rental, located at 1775 S. Main St., on Oct. 19, 2012. According to the rental agreement, the vehicle was supposed to be returned on Oct. 22. Employees at Hartfield’s contacted police when the car was not returned. Police attempted to contact Copeland at the phone number listed on the rental agreement, but were unsuccessful.
Officials said that the rental agency received a call on Dec. 20, 2012, from an unknown person stating that the vehicle was located at the Dollar General in Joanna, S.C. An employee was sent to that location and found the vehicle there, officials said, but Copeland could still not be located.
Copeland is charged with larceny in connection with the incident. His bond has been set at $5,000 cash or surety. He is currently being held at the Greenwood County Detention Center.
