Louden developing an all-around game for Vikings

Jacob Lethco
Staff Writer

GREENWOOD, SC – For the first two years of his career at Emerald High School, Kelvis Louden was known primarily as an outside shooter for the Emerald Vikings. Now a junior, Louden is averaging 12.9 points per game for the Vikings, helping lead them to a 10-5 record.

“I have worked hard,” Louden said. “I have worked really hard in practice with my team, but also put in a lot of work on my own.”

Although he has been one of the top scorers for the Vikings so far, the junior guard’s most glaring improvement as a player has been on the defensive side of the court.

“Kelvis (Louden) is a tremendous outside shooter,” Emerald Head Coach Mark Sorrow said. “He has improved on getting the ball to the basket more this year. But defensively, we really count on him to rebound. He (Louden) is our top rebounder, leads us in blocks, so that has certainly been a nice addition to his game this season.”

That defensive mindset adopted by Louden has resulted in a team high 7.0 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per contest.

“Defense has become a strength of mine,” Louden said. “I definitely take pride in the way I play defense.”

The added dimension of Louden’s ability to rebound on a consistent basis has allowed Sorrow to play his junior guard in different spots in the lineup, according to the Vikings’ head man.

“It’s great to have someone like that, that can play both inside and out,” Sorrow said. “He (Louden) has been able to play multiple positions for us this season.”

As the Vikings currently own a 3-3 Region record, Louden explained that he will have to continue his impressive defensive effort if the Vikings hope to create momentum as they look forward to a probable playoff appearance.

“We just need to keep playing hard defense,” Louden said. “Just keep working hard, have each other’s backs, and play as a team.”

Kelvis is a very athletic kid, very passionate about basketball..would play everyday if possible. He has been working hard since 14U AAU basketball and deserves to be recognized for his efforts to become a fine basketball player. His length and athleticism allow him to be a defensive playmaker, and his offensive skills have developed well! He is extremely aggressive and fearless when free to "be himself"...and is definitely at his best when doing so! GREAT family support, BOOKS first! Great Job, Kelvis..proud of you...but not surprised :)

I'm proud of you son. Continue to live your dream and stay focused on your future. School is one of the most important things in your life but GOD is the most important. Never stop putting him first. Stay on a narrow path and continue to stay out of bad company. May GOD BLESS YOU TO NEVER BE MISLED BY ANYONE. LOVE YA!
