Greenwood High School guard Jarryd Coleman signed a National Letter of Intent Friday morning to play basketball at Charleston Southern University.

“This is exciting,” Coleman said of taking his game to the next level. “I’ve always wanted to play basketball at a division I school. All my years of hard work are paying off.”

Coleman chose Charleston Southern over a number of other schools. Coleman said he went with the Buccaneers because they had been recruiting him since he was in the eighth grade.

Coleman is widely considered the best shooter in the state. His ability to shoot the basketball will fit right in at Charleston Southern. The Buccaneers were second in the nation in three-pointers made last season.

“I can shot the basketball well,” Coleman said of joining the Buccaneers. “They were second in the country in three-pointers, so I’m looking forward to going down there and filling it up for them.”

Charleston Southern head basketball coach Barclay Radebaugh agreed with the 6-foot-3 guard’s self-assessment.

“I have wanted to add (Coleman) to our roster for a long time,” Radebaugh said. “(Coleman) is the best shooter in the state of South Carolina and will fit into our style perfectly. (Coleman) has NBA range and is a gifted offensive player.”

Greenwood head coach Kelcey Stevens admits he misread what the talented Coleman could do on a basketball court.

“I admit, when I was at Saluda, I thought (Coleman) was just a shooter,” Stevens said of his star senior. “He is an all-around great offensive player. Not only can he shoot, but he has a great post-up game and can pass the ball very well.”

Coleman is known for his work ethic among everyone who has been a part of his young hoops career. All of those people also point to the way he carries himself off the court as a big reason for his success.

“(Coleman) is just a great kid,” Stevens said. “He works hard at everything all the time and is a big family guy. He has worked hard for everything he has gotten and he deserves every bit of it.”

Steve and Patricia you have done a great job with Jarryd and Jordan. Look forward to watching Jarryd play. Also, Steve get Jarryd to teach you to shoot.
