NINETY SIX, SC – Many have seen the man known as “Rock Man” around Ninety Six. There are as many stories about him as there are people to tell them, most of them untrue. What is true is that Rock Man lives in an abandoned home in Ninety Six with no water, plumbing, heat or air. A man who grew up in Ninety Six, Quinn Griffin, moved to Simpsonville and recently returned to his hometown and saw Rock Man walking down the street. He then decided to do something about it.
“I’ve known Rock Man since I was about 14,” Griffin said. “I saw him almost every day for five years. I saw him the other day and knew I had to do something for him.”
Griffin started a page on Indiegogo, a website designed to help people and organizations raise funds for their causes, to get the ball rolling on getting Rock Man a new home. He then started a Facebook page to raise awareness for the cause. As of Wednesday afternoon, more than 500 people had liked the page.
There have been obstacles in the process already, but Griffin is determined to accomplish the mission.
“This isn’t about who gets credit or who does what,” Griffin said. “The goal is to help Rock Man, that’s it. He needs a decent place to live and getting that done is what is most important.”
Griffin’s initial idea was to demolish the abandoned home in which Rock Man currently lives. It was brought to his attention that the people that own the land may have other plans for the property. So Griffin adjusted his plan and now is looking to find a home for Rock Man any way he can.
One step that Griffin has taken is establishing an organization and applying for 501(c)3 status as a nonprofit organization. Griffin said he is unsure of when the application will be approved, but that he is committed to seeing the mission through all the way to the end.
“The bottom line is to get Rock Man a home,” Griffin said. “I’m going to whatever I can to make sure it happens no matter how long it takes.”
