Delta Sigma Theta celebrates 100 years

Several members of Greenwood Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. joined thousands of members in Washington, DC to celebrate 100 years of sisterhood and service.

Mary H. Williams, Chapter President said 13,000 members of Delta Sigma Theta attended the National Centennial Founders Day Celebration, on Friday, January 11 – Sunday, January 13, 2013, in Washington, DC. Members gathered to celebrate this milestone in our history, to remember the vision of our great founders, and to rededicate ourselves to the sorority’s core principles.

The weekend celebration began Friday on the campus of Howard University, where the 22 founders established the first chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority on January 13, 1913, which has become the Nation’s largest sorority of African-American women. Members from across the country participated in the 22 community service projects in honor of the 22 founders.

Activities on Saturday included a Rededication Ceremony and Luncheon. The evening concluded with a Delta Centennial Honors Gala.  The Founders Day celebration continued Sunday morning, January 13, 2013, with the Ecumenical Worship Service delivered by Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie, Delta’s National Chaplain. The weekend festivities culminated with a black-tie Founders Day Dinner on Sunday evening.

This weekend celebration was a part of a series of centennial year events.  In March, the Deltas will re-enact the Woman Suffrage Parade of 1913, in which the founders participated.  The sorority will gather again in Washington, DC in July for its 51st National Convention.
