Mary Burkett Burriss, 95

Mary Burkett Burriss, 95, resident of Ashley House, widow of John Thomas Burriss, died February 15, 2013 at Hospice House.

Born in Hopkins, July 19, 1917, she was a daughter of the late Walter Oliver and Harriet Whitworth Burkett.  She was a graduate of Draughons Business College and retired as a secretary from Columbia School District 1 after more than 25 years service.

A member of First Presbyterian Church in Greenwood, she was a former member of Shandon Presbyterian Church in Columbia.  Mrs. Burris had lived most of her life in Hopkins (Richland Co. )and had moved to Greenwood in 2001 to be near her daughter.

Surviving are a son, John D. “Jack” Burriss and wife Deloria of Clinton and a daughter, Harriet B. Gooding and husband Robert of Greenwood; five grandchildren, Trevin Burriss of Washington, GA, Michael Burriss and wife Erin of Marietta, GA, Mary G. Clyburn and husband Bob of Ashburn, GA, Helen G. Fallaw and husband Mark of Edgefield and Susan Gooding of Greenville; ten great-grandchildren.  Mrs. Burriss was predeceased by a brother, Walter Burkett.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11AM Monday at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Columbia with Rev. Dr .John Bacot officiating.

The family is at the home of Harriet and Robert Gooding, 205 Yosemite Drive in Belle Meade and will receive friends at the graveside following the service.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Ashley House and Hospice Care of the Piedmont for the compassionate care shown to Mrs. Burriss during her stay and her illness.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Care of the Piedmont, 408 W. Alexander Ave., Greenwood, SC  29646.
