Mary Lankford - Greenwood

Mary Ouida Taliaferro Lankford, 89, resident of 101 Mimi’s Manor, widow of Veldee Grayson “ Val” Lankford, Sr. died Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at Self Regional Medical Center.

Born in Grenada, Mississippi, November 2, 1924, she was a daughter of the late Edwin Loving and Lillian Easter Taliaferro.  Mrs. Lankford was a 1949 graduate of the University of Tennessee where she received a Bachelor’s degree, majoring in Bacteriology and minoring in Zoology.  After graduation she worked for Bowman Gray, now Wake Forrest School of Medicine and went on to work with the Institute of Tropical Medicine in the West Indies.  Mrs. Lankford was retired from the Medical College of Georgia as a Microbiologist.  Throughout her tenure there she co-authored many publications in research that are still used in text books at the college. 

A member of St. Mark United Methodist Church, she was also a member of the Adult 1 Sunday School Class.  Mrs. Lankford was an active volunteer and enjoyed working with the Greenwood Food Bank, Greenwood United Ministries, Free Clinic, HospiceCare of the Piedmont and had served as a Reading Mentor for Greenwood School District 50. 

Survivors include a son, Gray Lankford and wife Renee of Augusta; daughter, Jenny Lynn Perkey of the home; four grandchildren, Toni Hamilton and husband Dr. Greg Hamilton, Cory Powell, Chloé Lankford and MaryAshlynne Perkey; two great-grandchildren, Raymond and Jimmy Hamilton; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 2:00 PM from St. Mark United Methodist Church with Rev. Carl Hunsucker and Rev. Ryan Spurrier officiating.  Burial will follow in Oakbrook Memorial Park. 

Pallbearers will be Dan Richardson, George Martin, Wilson Bruce, Brian Waldrep and Charlie Watkins.

Honorary escort will be David Ross and John Hughes, along with the Adult 1 Sunday School Class at St. Mark United Methodist Church.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 1:00 PM until the service hour at St. Mark United Methodist Church Social Hall and at other times at the home.
