Upstate South Carolina to count homeless neighbors

Beginning on January 27 and continuing through February 3, the Upstate Continuum of Care – a local consortium of housing agencies, service providers, and governmental units committed to ending homelessness in the Upstate of South Carolina – will conduct a census of individuals and families who are experiencing homelessness. Known as the Point-in-Time (PIT) Count, this annual census is an important tool for understanding the present needs of our local homeless population and providing direction for the development of future services.

Dangerous Winter Storm Forecast for South Carolina

Columbia, S.C. - The South Carolina Emergency Management Division asks residents to prepare themselves and their homes for possible winter weather. The National Weather Service predicts freezing rain and ice accumulations in the Upstate and northern Midlands lasting into Saturday. State and local agencies are putting emergency plans in place for winter weather and urge everyone in South Carolina to consider preparations to keep your home, community, family, vehicles and pets safe.

Cobb-Vantress, Inc. Establishing Operations In The Upstate

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Cobb-Vantress, Inc., a leading poultry research and development firm and subsidiary of Tyson Foods, Inc., will begin construction on a new feed mill in Laurens County, South Carolina early in 2016, with completion planned towards the middle of 2017.  The $22 million investment is expected to create about 12 new jobs in Joanna, S.C.

This year the American Cancer Society estimates there will be 1,685,210 new cases of cancer in the United States. That means every day 4,620 people will hear the words “you have cancer.” What can we do in the Lakelands to help those that are facing this terrible disease or even help prevent it from happening?  It is written that “the harvest is plentiful but the laborers are few.”   We have the opportunity to show compassion and make a difference. Help Cinderella get to the ball

The SC Bar Young Lawyers Division (YLD) is sponsoring its 15th annual Cinderella Project, which provides gently worn formal, bridesmaid and prom dresses for young women who lack the financial resources to buy a gown for their high school prom.

“This project is so important because not only are we helping students get the tangible benefit of a free prom dress, which eases a large financial burden for their families, but we are also helping them build memories that will last a lifetime,” said Sheila Bias, YLD’s Cinderella Project Committee Chair.

Arsenic and Old Lace coming in February

The first production of 2016 at the historic Abbeville Opera House will be Arsenic and Old Lace by Joseph Kesselring.  Of the twelve plays written by Kesselring, Arsenic and Old Lace was, by far, the most successful.  According to the opening night Broadway review in The New York Times, the play was "so funny that none of us will ever forget it."
