Greenwood Schools continue registration

Greenwood School District 50 continues registration for the 2016-2017 school year in order to have an accurate count for planning purposes.  New Kindergarten and New First Grade Students Should REGISTER.  Parents and/or guardians should register their new to kindergarten or first grade children at the school that serves their attendance area between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

Fleming wins SC Middle School State Wrestling Championship

At the beginning of last year, Cody Fleming set a personal goal. He wanted to out-do his older brother Brycen who racked up over a 100 wins during his high school career. Cody told his dad that he was going to have 100 wins as a middle schooler. His father did not want to tell him that this is nearly impossible.  It would mean Cody would have to have 50 matches per year and win all them.

Academic Honor Students Recognized for 2015 Fall Semester

Piedmont Technical College students who had outstanding academic accomplishments during the 2015 fall semester have earned inclusion on the President’s List. To be named to the list, students must be full time and earn a term GPA of 4.00. Students will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the college president.

PTC Student Receives Grainger Scholarship

Prosperity resident Troy Lawson, an industrial electronics technology and mechatronics technology student at Piedmont Technical College, has been awarded $2000 from The Grainger Tools for Tomorrow Scholarship Program. Each year, Grainger works with the American Association of Community Colleges to offer 250 scholarships of $2,000 each at 125 community colleges in the United States.

The Workforce Pathways Scholarship is available to any student in the seven-county Piedmont Tech service area who is at least 18 with a high school diploma or GED. Participants must also undergo a drug screen and background check.

Lander hosts celebration honoring the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Life in the U.S. during the turbulent 1960s, how far the nation has come since then and the challenges for reaching out to others were themes of a program today at Lander University, celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The event was sponsored by Lander’s Division of Student Affairs, whose vice president, Randy Bouknight, said it was the first in a series of programs that would be conducted in February, during Black History Month.

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Continuing her focus on statewide education reform, Governor Nikki Haley today announced her 2016 Education Reform Initiative, which addresses some of the toughest issues facing education in South Carolina today – from basic governance and accountability, to building safe schools, addressing transportation needs, and providing students across the state with access to technology. The governor made the announcement during a celebration with Superintendent of Education Molly Spearman at Frances Mack Intermediate School in Gaston, S.C.

Lander to honor former play-by-play announcer Rauch Wise, Jan. 13

GREENWOOD – To those who don't believe a letter to the editor accomplishes anything, take a look at the case of local attorney Rauch Wise.

In defense of the Lander College men's basketball program, Wise, who will be honored on Wednesday, Jan. 13 between the Bearcats' men's and women's games against USC Aiken, wrote a letter to the sports editor of The Index-Journal (Greenwood, S.C.) back in the mid 1980s to drum up support for Coach Finis Horne's team.

Lander University will hold a special program celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King on Thursday, Jan. 14, at 8 a.m., in the Josephine B. Abney Cultural Center Auditorium. The event is sponsored by Lander’s Division of Student Affairs and is free and open to the public.

Members of Lander University’s Police Department put away their shaving gear for the month of November to raise money for the university’s Student Wellness Fund.

Annual Massage Therapy Program Clinic Opens Jan. 19

Piedmont Technical College's massage therapy program will be offering its annual massage clinic as part of the training for its students beginning Jan. 19. The clinic will be open to the public Monday-Thursday from 12-3:45 p.m. at the PTC annex building on North Emerald Road.

A one-hour Swedish, deep tissue, neuromuscular or prenatal massage will be $20 for the general public.

Greenwood Schools announce make up days

Due to the flood related closings on October 5th and October 6th, School District 50 is announcing changes to the district calendar. The district will utilize the first two of the three designated days in the 2015-2016 calendar as school make-up days. February 15, 2016 and March 4, 2016 will become full school days for all students and staff. District 50 schools and offices will operate on a regular schedule on both of these days.

Additionally, staff who reported to work on October 5, 2015 will be able to trade March 24, 2016 for the day already worked.

Hubbard Scholarship Established at Lander

A new scholarship has been established at Lander University in honor of former Financial Aid Director Ian M. “Mac” Hubbard.

Hubbard served as Lander’s financial aid director from 1980 until 2001, guiding thousands of students through the process of applying for scholarships, grants and loans.

Criteria for the scholarship are financial need and an acceptable grade-point average. The award will be made by the financial aid office.

Lander students hike 500 miles on ancient pilgrimage routes

El Camino de Santiago (The Way of St. James) is a network of pilgrimage routes, winding across Europe, leading to Santiago de Compostela, in northwestern Spain, whose cathedral is the burial place of the apostle St. James.

In the Middle Ages, Santiago was one of the top three Christian destinations behind Rome and Jerusalem, as millions of pilgrims, prompted by religious faith, hiked hundreds of miles on the Camino to reach the cathedral.

Student motivation to be the subject of a presentation at Lander

Motivating students to focus on learning rather than grades will be the topic of a presentation at Lander University on Thursday, Jan. 7. The lecture is designed for teachers and students and is also open to the public.

The presenter will be Dr. Saundra Yancy Maguire, retired as director of the Center for Academic Success, and vice chancellor and Professor of Chemistry at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge.

Lakeview students send Christmas cheers

The Lakeview Student Council members shared the holiday cheer by creating placemats to be delivered by Meals on Wheels and collected 500 pounds of food for the food bank.  Also students in 2nd grade sent Christmas Cheer to patients in Diamond Physical Therapy Rehab in Simpsonville, South Carolina.
